Improving Healthcare & Supporting Medical Education

We are AHDT

About us

AHDT was conceived on January 21st 2002 by the founding members with an original name of Northern Nigerian Medical Association UK.  This was subsequently changed to Africa Healthcare Development Trust (AHDT).

AHDT was conceived from the need to address some fundamental challenges facing healthcare in Northern Nigeria, specifically:

  • accessing quality medical devices & services at reasonable cost: Including medical equipment; drugs and quality medical services
  • accessing quality medical content & ongoing education – including books & journals; teaching aids; experiences
  • accessing peer support and mentorship – through being part of a wider community of professionals supporting each other and building community resilience.
  • Addressing these challenges required the formation of a strong and formidable association, bringing together (initially) doctors of Northern Nigerian origin practicing in the UK & beyond. This association, AHDT, would be run by a highly motivated, enthusiastic and determined leadership – and will be driven by a culture of courage, determination and cooperation.

AHDT has since expanded to include non-clinical professionals and a wider community beyond Northern Nigeria.

AHDT is governed by a constitution adopted by its general membership.  Its day-to-day affairs are managed by an executive committee elected by  members. As a registered charity, we subscribe to  the UK Charity Commission’s guidelines on good practice in the  governance of charities.

Our trustees and patrons are appointed by the  executive committee and are drawn from members of the wider British  society.
